Homongi in the early Showa Era

These three Homongis had been worn by my mother in law in her girlhood. They have been unused in her closet since then, and finally given to me now. While Kimono has a long history in Japanese culture, Homongi actually has relatively short history, only about 100 years in total. It has been said that Mitsukoshi, one of the oldest Japanese department stores, first started selling Homongi around the end of Taisho era and intended that people can wear it more casually.  It seems that these Homongis are also from early times of that period. You might notice that these sleeves are relatively long compare to the ones available nowadays, and the colors and patterns on them are also different. I assume their styles understandably reflect the change of general sense of fashion.

1 (old Homongi1)

Honestly, I am not sure when and what for she wore this Homongi
but I guess it would have been a tea party,
maybe a new year’s ceremony or a marriage meeting perhaps.

帯(old Obi)
