For Komon kimono, there
are no certain rules for places and
directions of patterns put on it unlike
other forms such as Tomesode, Homongi and
Tukesage(The design of them are drawn
upward).
Regardless of the size
or density of the pattern, a kimono that has
a pattern without a particular direction is
generically called 'komon Kimono’ nowadays.
Therefore, there are
various outfits that are individually
characteristic and their patterns are very
diverse. That means you can have many
choices for your taste and feeling which
allows you to fully enjoy this
variety.
Although Komon has this
good advantage, it also has a disadvantage;
you would not be allowed to wear it for
formal ceremonies because of this natural
freedom (except Edo Komon: it is an
exception but I will describe it next time).
Komon is suitable not
only for regular practices, concerts and
casual walking but also for semi-formal use
with additional dress-up, so you can choose
a good pattern and obi that go with the
situation.
As I described above,
there are various types of Komon sorted by
its dyeing techniques. Most well known
techniques are 'Tokyo-Zome' (for Edo Komon
and Tokyo-style fashionable Komon),
'Kyo-Komon' (Kyoto-style) and 'Kaga-komon'.
I will show you some Komon Kimonos with the
unique techniques excluding Edo Komon (which
I will talk about later).
